Planning a trip? Our travel insurance for disabled people will protect your adventure. It covers all destinations and over 100 sports and activities. You can take us with you, whatever you’ve got planned!
Can you get travel insurance if you have a disability?
You can with InsureandGo. We think travel insurance should be available to as many people as possible. That includes the 24% of Brits who have a disability.
We understand that not all disabilities are visible. Our travel insurance for disabled adults covers physical disabilities. Also, sensory disabilities and learning difficulties. Mental health conditions and speech and language disorders are also covered.
94% of our customers rated their experience as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Great’ so you know you’re in good hands3.
What are the benefits of disability travel insurance?
Our travel insurance for disabled people ensures nothing gets in the way of your holidays. That’s because it:
- Covers mobility aids. At InsureandGo, we’ll cover wheelchairs, walking frames, sticks, supplies and equipment.
- Covers emergency medical expenses. This includes expenses related to your disability.
- Covers repatriation. Ill or injured on holiday? We’ll get you home.
- Covers cancellation. If your travel plans change due to health reasons, we’ll cover any unexpected costs.
- Protects your belongings. Our travel insurance for disabilities can even cover your medication if you lose it.
- Gives you the freedom to do more. We cover over 100 different sports and activities as standard.
- Help when you need it. We offer a 24/7 emergency medical helpline.
We want you to enjoy your holiday, not worry about unexpected expenses. With no upper age limit, we’ll consider any medical conditions you may have. That way, you’ll know you’re fully covered.
You’ll need to tell us all your pre-existing medical conditions. If your medical history isn’t accurate, you may have to pay for unexpected medical costs. Our policy wording provides full terms and conditions of what is and isn’t included.
What types of disability does InsureandGo’s travel insurance cover?
Disabilities can be short-term or life-long. They may not be immediately visible. But while they come in many forms, disabilities won’t stand in the way of a great holiday.
According to European law, all passengers with a disability can receive assistance when they fly, free of charge. Disabled travellers also have EU rights on ferries and cruise ships.
The FCDO recommends that all travellers with a disability take out travel insurance. Our travel insurance for disabled people includes the following conditions:
- Physical disability. The most common disability in the UK. Our travel insurance for disabled people covers mobility aids like wheelchairs and walking frames. Essential protection, as many travellers say they’ve been damaged by airlines.
- Sensory disability. Hearing aids and other assistive devices are vital for many travellers with a sensory disability. Consider valuables for expensive devices to cover them for loss, theft, or damage.
- Intellectual disability. Travellers with learning disabilities may need extra support. Adding group travel insurance can cover a carer or companion.
- Mental health conditions. Travel can disrupt routines, which can affect mental wellbeing. Disability travel insurance that includes access to a 24/7 helpline can help manage unexpected challenges.
- Speech and language disorders. Alternative communication devices may be crucial when you travel. Disability travel insurance can cover them for loss or damage while abroad.
What does InsureandGo’s disability travel insurance cover?
What’s covered?
Our travel insurance for disability includes:
- Medical emergency expenses.
- Cover for cancellation of your trip.
- Our 24-hour emergency assistance team, available to call, day or night, wherever you are
- Over 100 sports and activities covered (see your policy wording for a full list of activities)
- Personal belongings and baggage cover (including mobility aids)
- Personal money, passports and travel documents cover.
- Accommodation cover.
- Legal expenses cover.
What’s not covered?
There are some situations travel insurance will not cover. For example:
- You cannot cover events or reasons to claim which took place before you booked the trip or purchased insurance. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
- Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
- All of our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. But there may be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go
Find out about our optional add-ons for activities like extreme sports, cruises and golf.
We will consider all pre-existing medical conditions. Find out more about medical travel insurance.
The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions.
Cover for wheelchairs and mobility scooters
Being a wheelchair user in Britain – a community of over 1.2 million strong – can make travel stressful. A study found 40% of disabled travellers had mobility aids damaged or lost by airlines. It’s no wonder that 49% of disabled people say they worry about their wheelchairs when going on holiday.
Mobility scooters and wheelchairs are significant investments. Travelling with your own? It’s important that your insurance policy covers against loss, theft, or accidental damage.
Our disability travel insurance will cover your mobility equipment whilst you’re abroad. This includes wheelchairs, walking frames, sticks, supplies and equipment designed to help provide mobility.
Is your mobility aid particularly valuable? Adding gadgets cover protects single items, up to £1,000.
Travelling with a carer?
Our travel Insurance for disabled people does not automatically cover a carer. If you need protection that covers both of you under one policy, a group travel insurance policy is a great option. It means that, if you have to cancel your trip because your carer falls ill, you’re both covered. And there’s much less paperwork if you do need to make a claim.

Medical screening questions we may ask
Medical screening helps find the policy that’s right for you. Examples of the kind of questions we’ll ask include:
- What is the nature of your disability? For example, is it physical, developmental, or sensory?
- Does your disability require the use of mobility aids or medical equipment during travel?
- What assistance will you need while travelling?
- Are you currently taking any medication?
- Have you been in hospital or undergone surgery in the past year?
- Have you experienced any recent changes in your health related to your disability?
- Are you awaiting any medical tests, treatments, or diagnoses?
- Do you have any conditions that could worsen during travel?
- Are you travelling with someone who can assist you if needed?
You can fill out the medical screening online when you get your quote. But if the questions are not suitable for your situation, call us for free on 0808 169 6776.
What cover does the GHIC give for disabled people?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) helps you get healthcare in the EU. It covers treatment that can’t reasonably wait until you get back home.
A GHIC lets you use healthcare services on the same terms as local residents. This might mean free care, or care at a lower cost.
But the GHIC does not do everything that travel insurance can do. It won’t cover private care, or get you flown back home if you’re too unwell to travel. And it won’t cover things like lost bags or personal belongings. Disability travel insurance is the only way to make sure you’re properly covered.

Travel checklist for disabled people
Before you travel, make sure you:
- Prepare your insurance details. Carry your policy number and keep the emergency assistance contact details handy. Make sure you know what to do if something goes wrong during your trip.
- Notify your transport provider. Inform your airline, train service, or cruise operator about your assistance needs. It’s best to do this when booking. This is important if you’re bringing a mobility aid.
- Check you’re fit-to-fly: You may need a fit-to-fly certificate from your GP. Each airline has its own guidelines. Most airlines require one if you’ve recently been discharged from hospital, or if you’re recovering from an operation
- Use an accessibility checklist. Fill out ABTA’s travel checklist for disabled and less mobile passengers. Share it with your tour operator or travel agent. This ensures transport, accommodation, and destination facilities meet your needs.
Talk to your GP. Get a doctor’s letter outlining your condition, treatment and medicines. Keep it in your hand luggage in case customs need clarification.

How much does disability travel insurance cost?
The cost of travel insurance for disabled travellers depends on several different factors:
- Your disability: The type and severity of your disability will impact the cost. For example, how it affects your daily activities. Also, any medication, treatment or equipment you might need.
- Other pre-existing medical conditions: If you’ve got any other health conditions, this will impact your premium.

Is a disability considered a pre-existing medical condition?
Yes, it is. Health conditions, illnesses and disabilities are considered pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll need to declare any disability when getting your travel insurance quote, to ensure you’re covered.
You’ll need to declare any disease, illness, condition or injury for which you have:
- Taken any prescribed medication or required medical treatment within the last two years

Still not sure? Talk to us. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
Do I have to declare my disability on my travel insurance?
Yes, you must declare all your pre-existing conditions when you take out a travel insurance policy with us. This includes any disabilities.
Declare any disability, even minor ones. Not doing so could mean your claim gets rejected.
We’ll ask you for details during the medical screening process. At this point, you must declare all pre-existing conditions. Then we can offer the right cover.
We will not cover you if:
- Your state of health is significantly worse than you told us
- You know you have a terminal condition, but have not told us
- You know you will need medical treatment during your journey
- One of the purposes of your journey is to get medical treatment
