What’s covered?

What’s not covered?

There are some situations travel insurance will not cover. For example:

  • You cannot cover events or reasons to claim which took place before you booked the trip or purchased insurance. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
  • Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
  • All our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. There may, however, be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go

Is Egypt in Europe for travel insurance?

Geographically, Egypt is a transcontinental country. It spans the north-east corner of Africa and the south-west corner of Asia.

Although not in the EU, many insurance providers treat Egypt as Europe. InsureandGo is one of them. We cover Egypt under any of our European travel insurance policies.

Always check your policy. Some insurers group Egypt with the Middle East or North Africa. If that’s the case, Egypt will be included under their worldwide policies.

Our reviews speak for themselves

Very easy and quick to do online

“I needed travel insurance for my trip to Egypt. It was very easy and quick to do online, and even though I had medical conditions they offered extremely competitive prices with a choice of three levels for your needs. But even the top one with no excess was much cheaper than any other quotes from other companies I’d received! Would highly recommend!”

Travel insurance for Egypt with pre-existing medical conditions

If you’re travelling to Egypt with a pre-existing medical condition, insurance is a must. Pre-existing conditions are more common than you think. Even if you have a common condition like asthma, you’ll need travel insurance that covers it.

At 96% desert, Egypt is one of the dustiest countries in the world. Every year between March and May, the spring Khamsin wind causes frequent sand storms. When they hit, the Egyptian Meteorological Association issues warnings to people with respiratory problems.

At InsureandGo, we’ll consider all medical conditions, including COPD, heart conditions, and asthma.

Our online medical screening process is easy. To learn more, read about travel insurance for medical conditions. Or, take a look at our policy wording documents. If you’d rather talk to someone instead, please get in touch with us.

You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when you buy your Egypt travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your condition while away.

Frequently asked Questions on Egypt Travel Insurance

Do I need travel insurance for Egypt?

Travel insurance is not a compulsory requirement to visit Egypt. However, the UK Government recommends that all British nationals travelling to Egypt take out insurance. This is due to:

  • Limited public healthcare: Unlike the NHS, Egypt’s public healthcare is generally not accessible to tourists. Treatment at public hospitals or clinics would likely require significant out-of-pocket payments.
  • Expensive private care: Private healthcare in Egypt is good, but comes at a premium. Even minor medical emergencies can quickly become expensive. Hospitals may not treat you unless your travel insurance covers the cost.
  • No reciprocal agreement: The UK and Egypt don’t have a reciprocal healthcare agreement. The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) isn’t valid in Egypt.
  • Higher health risks: Blistering hot temperatures bring higher risks of sunburn and heat stroke. Outdoor air quality in Egypt is often poor, known to be harmful for those with respiratory problems. There is a risk of insect or tick-borne diseases in some areas of Egypt.
  • Higher accident risks: Egypt’s roads are more dangerous than the UK’s. Recent figures show deaths per 100,000 inhabitants to be 10.1 in Egypt and just 2.9 in the UK.

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Yes, you need a visa to travel to Egypt as a British citizen with a valid passport. You can get an Egypt visa on arrival if you plan to stay for 30 days or less. You’ll do this from approved bank kiosks at the airport.

The British Government recommends you get your visa before you travel. British passport holders can do this by applying in-person or by post to the Egyptian Consulate in London.

You can also get a visa online before you travel using the Visa2Egypt portal. It will be valid for up to three months.

However, you don’t need a visa if you’re travelling to Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. Upon arrival you’ll receive a free entry permission stamp which allows you to stay for up to 15 days, in just those areas.

Find out more information about visas and entry requirements for Egypt.

Do I need health insurance to travel to Egypt?

You don’t need private health insurance if you’re planning a trip. It’s only recommended for British Nationals living in Egypt.

However, British tourists do need Egypt travel insurance that covers healthcare costs. Travel insurance is specifically designed to cover medical emergencies while you’re travelling abroad. But it can also protect you from other unexpected situations, including:

  • Personal accident and liability
  • Cancelling and cutting short your holiday
  • Abandoning your trip
  • Delayed departure
  • Accommodation cover
  • Personal belongings and baggage
  • Personal money, passport and travel documents
  • Legal expenses

What type of travel insurance do you need for Egypt?

The type of travel insurance you need will depend on your holiday plans.

  • Going away just once? Single trip policies will cover you just for one trip to Egypt, for up to 365 days of consecutive travel.
  • Heading to Europe multiple times in a year? Egypt is covered by our European annual multi-trip travel insurance. It covers you for between 45-55 days of each trip.
  • Egypt part of a globetrotting adventure? Our worldwide travel Insurance has two options to choose from: Worldwide (excluding the USA, Canada, Egypt and the Caribbean) and Worldwide (including the USA, Canada, Egypt and the Caribbean)
  • Need any optional extras? Flexible add-ons let you tailor your policy. For example, it can cover particularly expensive gadgets, golf, cruising or any hazardous activities.

Is the GHIC valid in Egypt?

No, it isn’t. A GHIC, formerly known as the EHIC or E111, is a medical card that can be used in most of the EU. It entitles you to free or reduced-cost medical treatment when you’re visiting EU countries, plus Montenegro, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Egypt is not part of the EU and is not covered by the GHIC scheme.

Does European travel insurance cover Egypt?

Yes, it does, when you get your travel insurance for Egypt at InsureandGo. Although the trans-continental country straddles both Africa and Asia, we treat Egypt as Europe for our policies. Other insurers may classify the country as part of the Middle East or North Africa.

Can I travel to Egypt with a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you can, and our travel health insurance Egypt will cover your trip. Simply tell us your medical conditions when you get your quote. This ensures you get the right level of protection while you’re away.

Travelling to Egypt with a pre-existing condition? There are a few things you’ll need to do before you go:

  • Declare your prescribed medications: Some prescribed medicines may be controlled substances in Egypt. You may need permission from Egypt’s Ministry of Health before you arrive. If you do not have prior permission, the medication will not be allowed.
  • Get a letter from your GP: If you’re travelling with prescription medication, carry a letter from your GP. It needs to specify your condition; the quantity of medication you’re bringing; and that the medication is for your personal use only.
  • Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date: Vaccinations are important for everyone. But if you have a pre-existing condition, they’re vital. Find out what vaccines you need for Egypt. You risk having a claim denied if you become unwell with an illness that a vaccination could’ve prevented.
  • Buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip: You’ll be covered for cancellation should an unexpected medical event mean you can’t go.

How much does travel insurance to Egypt cost?

Several factors could impact how much you pay for your travel insurance to Egypt:

  • The length of your trip: Longer Egyptian adventures typically cost more to insure than shorter ones.
  • Your age: Generally, younger travellers will pay less for travel insurance.
  • Your health: Pre-existing health factors can increase your chance of needing repatriation, for example.
  • The level of cover you choose: At InsureandGo we offer four levels of cover. With Budget, Silver, Gold and Black, we’re sure to have a policy to suit you.
  • Any policy add-ons you need: If you plan on adventurous activities like scuba diving in the Red Sea, you might need additional cover for those specific sports. You might also need extra gadget cover if you’re packing something particularly valuable.

Think carefully about your travel plans. For example, Egypt is included in our European policies. Buying an annual European policy may be more affordable if you’re also planning trips elsewhere in Europe this year.
