Best marathons in Europe
London
Held in the spring, The London Marathon began in 1981 and has run every year since. It currently holds the world record for being the largest annual fundraising event and has raised over £770 million for charity over its 36 years. It’s part of the World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago & New York.
Paris
Along with Berlin and London, the Paris Marathon is one of the most popular annual marathons in Europe, and is limited to 50,000 runners. The first Paris Marathon (the Tour de Paris) was won by an Englishman for a prize of 200 francs. All races in France require a doctor’s note, less than a year old, stating that the competitor is fit for the competition.
Berlin
Part of the World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Chicago and New York, the Berlin Marathon has been running since 1974. The event is split over two days and includes inline skaters, wheelchair riders, power walkers, handbikers and a children’s marathon (4 km).
Lisbon
Formally known as the Cidade de Lisboa Marathon from 1986, the Lisbon Marathon was rebranded the Rock’n’Roll Marathon in 2013. The event consists of both a full and half marathon, and both races have live bands at the finish line and along the course.
Rome
Held annually around March, the Rome Marathon begins in front of the 2,000-year-old Colosseum. The course runs through the picturesque, albeit narrow, streets in the old part of the city, past Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Spanish Steps. The only problem you may encounter with this idyllic route is that about half the course runs on cobblestone streets!
